Geography Day 2021 at St. Joseph's Convent High School Bandra

To mark the Birth Anniversary of the noted Indian Geographer, Chandrashekar Dhundiraj Deshpande and his valuable contribution towards the Geography subject, January 14 is celebrated as GEOGRAPHY DAY. The students of Std IX have expressed their views on the subject through this video.

GEOGRAPHY DAY - JANUARY 14, 2021

The students and teachers of St Joseph’s Convent High School, Bandra celebrated Geography Day on  January 14, 2021  to create an awareness for the need to protect the environment , causes of pollution and other factors that are affecting the environment. It is also the Birth Anniversary of noted Indian author, geographer, educationist and teacher Chandrashekhar Dhundiraj Deshpande      (14 January 1912 – 14 November 1999), popularly known as C. D. Deshpande.

He was an academic innovator, he worked on many fronts to improve the status of Geography as an independent science and discipline in India. For this purpose, he gathered ideas from the principal centres of geographical teaching and research in the United Kingdom. Deshpande made vigorous efforts for the teaching of geography in schools and colleges in Maharashtra. He laid particular stress on the nature of the subject. Deshpande's own personal efforts were also crucial in the establishment of an independent department of geography at the University of Bombay. He raised the question of founding an All-India geographical Organization, and efforts in that direction led to the establishment of the National Association of Geographers, India.

The Students of Std. 9 prepared a video on the Significance of the day and need to study Geography.

A Seminar Geo- Spark was also organized for the Geography teachers of the school as well as other teachers from all over the city/ state also participated. The seminar was conducted by Dr. Aparna Phadke (Prof. Mumbai University- Geography Dept.) The resource person stressed on the need to make Geography more relatable to the students by citing valid examples in class and also using digital mapping to create an interest.

The Students from Stds. V to X participated in an OnlineGeography quiz based on India prepared by the Geography teachers.

Seminar - 'Geo Spark' 

To celebrate Geography Day on 14th January, 2021 a seminar entitled 'Geo Spark' was organised for geography teachers. The speaker was Dr. Aparna Phadke, an eminent geographer and professor at the University of Mumbai. The seminar was attended by a number of geography teachers from our schools, vicinity schools and other FC schools.

 

It was an enriching experience as Dr. Aparna explained concepts and introduced the teachers to new apps that would help make geography teaching and learning interesting. She also motivated the teachers to give creative assignments so that  students develop a liking for geography and the environment.
